As an anti-aging prevention, should I take antioxidants and if so, what kind and how much?
For the last 50 years, the media has been feeding the public with information on free radicals that attack your organs and age you. Many books have been written on the subject with the promise of preventing heart disease and cancer. Unfortunately, most of the information available to the public is grossly inaccurate.
In 2007, the Journal of Nutrition published a study on the subject of antioxidants and skin cancer.
The study included 7,876 women ages 35-60 and 5,141 men ages 45-60. The authors concluded “our study indicated that regular intake of such nutrients, especially at doses taken by consumers of supplements in northern countries, may be associated with harmful effects.”
A study found in the Archives of Internal Medicine dated August 13, 2007, did not support the use of antioxidants for the prevention of heart disease.
In a Meta Study published in J.A.M.A., the authors revealed that antioxidants have no effect on gastrointestinal cancer and were associated with an increase in all-cause mortality.
In WebMD, June 13, 2007, it was noted that “the use of popular antioxidant supplements, beta carotene, Vitamin E, or Vitamin A, slightly increase a person’s risk of death.”
In the paper, The Antioxidant Myth, written by Linda Melton PhD., the author stated that “if popping pills to stave off the ravages of aging sounds too good, that is because it is.”
Essentially, the media created the free radical myth and is promoting the use of antioxidants for a disease that does not exist.
