Alzheimer’s Dietary Link

My mother was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. What natural approach can I use to help my mother’s condition?

According to a recent study published in the Archives of Neurology, a healthy diet may lower levels of brain chemicals linked to Alzheimer’s disease, while an unhealthy diet may raise the level of these chemicals.  Essentially, the objective of the study was to compare the effect of a 4-week high saturated fat/high glycemic index (HIGH) diet with a low saturated fat/low glycemic index (LOW) diet on insulin, lipid metabolism, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers of Alzheimer’s disease, and cognition for healthy adults and adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The researchers found that administering LOW diet increased beta amyloid concentration, which is contrary to the level found in Alzheimer’s disease. However, the LOW diet did the opposite for healthy adults. The CSF lipoproteins level was increased by the LOW fat diet and decreased by the HIGH fat diet. For the MCI group, CSF insulin level increased with the LOW fat diet while the HIGH fat lowered the CSF insulin in healthy adults.

The researchers concluded that the results suggest that diet may be a powerful environmental factor that modulates Alzheimer’s disease risk through its effect on the central nervous system concentrations of beta amyloid, lipoprotein, oxidative stress, and insulin.

Hippocrates was right when he said “let thy food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.”

I recommend that you find a whole food nutritionist for your mother and see if she too can benefit from a dietary lifestyle change.

Secret of Eczema Relief

I suffer from eczema and am under the care of a dermatologist. I have been using a topical cream which seems to help. However, every time I stop using it, the eczema returns within a few days. Is there a natural approach for my condition?

eczemaEczema can be a frustrating and debilitating condition. The topical creams applied to the skin does improve the condition but does not cure it. The unfortunate side effect of these medications is a gradual destruction of your body and health.

Your experience is common among those who use these medications. Once they stop applying the cream the condition comes back. Essentially, the creams only masks the condition. They are palliative but not curative. The continued use of these creams can cause dysbiosis which is an abnormal gut flora. Many experts believe that dysbiosis is the root cause of eczema. This situation applies to adults as well as to children who suffer from eczema.

When a person develops dysbiosis, the immune system is effected allowing microbes and toxins into your body. This will cause an immune reaction which eventually will lead to a chronic viral infection, allergies, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, yeast, asthma and eczema.

If you suffer from chronic eczema you will need to fix your “gut” which could be the root cause of your problem. By normalizing your gut, your digestive system will curtail the allergic reaction in your skin and body in general.

I recommend that you find a whole food nutritionist and find out if you too can be helped.

Menstrual and Menopausal Problems

I am having menstrual problems and my doctor told me that I have hormonal imbalance and suggested I take hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Is there a drugless solution?

menopauseYou have been lead to believe that the cause is most often a hormone imbalance, and the treatment is simply to restore the balance by taking synthetic hormones. But ask yourself, how did it happen and is there a way to avoid it. If so, is HRT the best choice when it comes to restoring balance? I often hear, “my mother had similar problems, so it must be in the genes.” However, the study of epigenetics refutes this claim.

In a published study in Molecular & Cellular Biology (August 1, 2003), it stated that mice that contained abnormal genes predisposing them to a yellow coat, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer showed no sign of the diseases when nutritional supplementation was given. The mice that did not get the supplements manifested obesity, diabetes and a yellow coat.

So ask yourself again, is HRT replacement the best treatment? It is my opinion based on my experience that the answer is no. In my view, HRT in general is simply a strategy to put out the fire without addressing the cause. The best way to address the cause is to discover your individual nutritional deficiencies and barriers to healing. Barriers to healing include food and chemical sensitivities.

The state of your health depends on what you put in and on your body. Usually, it is never too late to make the necessary changes.

If you are ready to improve your health without drugs and their side effects, then there is hope. I recommend that you find a chiropractor who is also trained in Nutrition Response Testing and enjoy the trip to better health.
