I suffer from chronic abdominal pain, bloating, excessive gas, joint pain, and chronic fatigue. I have been taking several medications but nothing seems to do any good. My neighbor told me she had similar symptoms and was told she had a leaky gut syndrome. Could you tell me what it is, what causes it and what can I do to improve my health.
The lining of the gut is permeable-miniscule particles can pass through it. These “holes” are tiny enough to keep contained the molecules that shouldn’t penetrate, that might cause disturbance or harm. Digested food goes through, but partially-digested food, wastes, toxins (including toxins from sick bacteria) and other abnormal or foreign substances are blocked out. If this intestinal barrier is damaged, and the “holes” become bigger, allowing particles that are not supposed to go through to pass into the body, then it can cause a cascade of symptoms. Abnormal leakage means that the liver has to work overtime to break down and remove these particles. This is increased intestinal permeability or leaky gut syndrome.*(Health News Vol13 No 2)
Some of the probable causes include antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, Candida overgrowth, parasites, low fiber diet, Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, nutritional deficiencies, environmental toxins, compromised immune system and others. Food allergies can contribute to a leaky gut and this can cause food intolerances. An increase in intestinal permeability is both a cause and a result of food sensitivities. Some clinicians contend that it’s prudent to consider leaky gut syndrome as an integral part of any chronic condition.
My recommendation is for you to find a chiropractor who practices Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) to determine if you are a NRT case.
